The importance of an integrated approach on social and environmental challenges in international cooperation

15 December @ 09:00 - 14:30

An array of unfortunate events in 2026 both globally (flash floods in Nepal, fires in the Mediterranean,…) as in Belgium (heath waves, fires in the High Fens,…) showed that the environmental and climate crises are not some distant risk, but that we are living it already. At the same time, there is a reduction of political interest and support to tackle these crises. These ecological crises are at many levels intertwined with social challenges. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated approach.

To inspire us how to operationalise this integrated approach to social and environmental challenges within international cooperation, SECORES invites you to a symposium on 15 December 2026 with presentations, debate and 3 inspiring key-notes:

  • David VAN REYBROUCK is the internationally praised author of Congo – the epic history of a people, and Revolusi – Indonesia and the Birth of the Modern World. As “Philosopher Laureate for the Netherlands and Flanders” he opens minds beyond the present and beyond geographical borders and social bubbles on topics as democracy, climate action and just transition.
  • As director of CERAC, the Belgian Climate Risk Assessment Centre, Luc BAS is a privileged witness of the climate crisis, and its link with human well-being. With his long experience in IUCN, he also brings nature conservation expertise to the debate.
  • An ANSOMS is professor in Development Studies at UC Louvain. With a background in economics, she leads an interdisciplinary research team working on climate change and natural resource conflicts. She is involved in the Policy Support Program producing actionable knowledge on the nexus development-environment-climate change. She is author of Space for stories – Passion and vulnerability in Research.

Gie GORIS, former chief editor of MO* magazine will lead us through this interesting day.
